Irrotational fluctuations associated with axisymmetric shear layers
Abstract
The irrotational fluid motion induced by an axisymmetric turbulent shear layer is studied. It is shown that the mean square of the velocity fluctuations in the radial direction is not equal to the sum of the mean squares of the velocity fluctuations in the streamwise and the azimuthal directions as one would expect from results for the plane shear layer. The influence of the distance from the shear layer on the intensity of the fluctuations also differs considerably from the corresponding result for the plane shear layer.
