Analysis of the variations in the light curve of U Pegasi and starspot activity
Abstract
We have carried out a systematic analysis of nine two-color light curves observed between 1950 and 1983 of the W UMa type contact binary U Peg. The results are: (1) The distortions in the light curves during 1958-1970 can be successfully simulated with starspot activity. Using an improved W-D program containing differential correction of spot parameters we have obtained the spot parameters, longitude, latitude, temperature and radius and their time variations. (2) The photometric solutions at the various epochs also show that there may be other factors causing light curve distortion, including variation in the temperature difference between the two components, instability of the common shell and some other physical factors unaccounted for by present physical models.
