Heating and Acceleration of Heavy Ions during Solar Flares
Abstract
The heating of the various ion species during solar flares is examined in an attempt to develop a unified model incorporating the enrichments in abundances seen by ISEE 3 and some of the characteristics of the soft X-ray line emissions. Problems associated with identifying the initial conditions and the driving mechanisms for the particle acceleration are addressed. The acceleration of heated plasma ions as they propagate upward into the corona is studied via particle simulations.
