Distributed processes as contributors to the acceleration of cosmic rays
Abstract
Possible physical propagation models for which the cosmic ray escape lifetime could be energy independent are considered. In these models, the acceleration time would increase with energy, as is needed to explain the decrease in secondary/primary ratios with energy. A mathematical approach for calculating these ratios is presented, and calculative results are reported. The extent to which an acceptable model with mixed prompt and distributed acceleration can be constructed is examined. Such a model has obvious advantages in explaining the apparent constancy of the cosmic ray anisotropy as far as 20 to the 14th eV.
