Effect of diverging magnetic fields on mass loss in late-type giant stars
Abstract
An analysis is presented of the hypothesis of Holzer et al. (1983) that there is no basis for the belief that winds driven by Alfven waves from cool low-gravity stars can exhibit both a large mass-loss rate and a small asymptotic flow speed. A model which naturally allows for a wide range of damping lengths and Alfven periods is presented. A large range of acceptable damping lengths and Alfven periods is obtained with a range which suggests that Alfven waves may be important in the mass loss of late-type giant stars.
