The Largescale Inhomogeneous Distribution of Ly-Alpha Absorption Lines in the Spectra of Quasars
Abstract
Evidence is noted for the existence of a very large scale inhomogeneity in the distribution of Ly-alpha absorption-line redshifts in a sample of these lines from the spectra of quasars. A significant peak occurs in the redshift histogram at z of 2.9, and a power-spectrum analysis indicates a periodic length comparable to the periodicity of emission-line redshifts for quasars. The ratio of emission to absorption redshifts for the Ly-alpha lines also exhibits several peaks in its distribution that are in agreement with predictions based on the existence of periodicity in these redshifts.
