This paper describes a simple set of criteria to define the usable bandwidth of a satellite transponder. These criteria are then used in conjunction with state-of-the-art microwave filter and multiplexer (MUX) technology to optimize the bandwidths of a number of satellite systems. The method described represents an advance over techniques presently used to define the usable bandwidths of satellite transponders and to measure their spectral efficiency.
