Strange attractors - Estimating the complexity of chaotic signals
Abstract
Three classes of chaos indicators are examined: fractal dimensions (FD), metric entropies (ME), and Liapunov exponents (LE). The general theory of FD is elaborated and the numerical implementation of various algorithms is discussed. A general review of the concepts of ME and LE is presented, together with relationships among the chaos indicators. Finally, the estimation of FD from experimental data is considered, with particular attention given to the effect of filtering on a chaotic signal.
