Launch requirements for SDI - System and technology impacts
Abstract
The fundamental requirement for cheaper and more reliable access to space can only be accomplished through a new system. Here, the fundamental characteristics of such a system are described, and then the payback of such a system is compared with that of existing systems. The driving feature of the Advanced Launch System (ALS) is that it is being designed as a transportation system. It will rely on high reliability and short postfailure standdowns to insure high availability. One of the primary goals of the ALS program is to reduce the recurring costs associated with U.S. launch operations.
