Cavitation in a confined vortex
Abstract
Experiments have been conducted in a vortex tube in order to determine the condition for vapor cavitation to occur. LDA measurements of the tangential and axial velocities have been made and cavitation inception numbers determined under a variety of flow conditions. Analysis of the data leads to set a criterion for occurrence of cavitation in vortex chambers when the flow is generated by tangential injection and axial evacuation of liquid. The results apply to vortex chambers for which the length to diameter ratio is large relative to unity.
