Variations of the aerodynamic drag coefficient of a sphere in an argon plasma
Abstract
This paper presents results of experimental determinations of the aerodynamic drag coefficient of a sphere in an argon plasma with Reynolds numbers between 0.4 and 10 in a plasmatron channel with an intersectional cavity for an arc current of 75-190 A. The characteristics of plasma flow were obtained using solutions of magnetogasdynamics equations. It was found that the presence of an intersectional cavity does not cause any noticeable rearrangement of the arc current. The toroidal vortex formed in the cavity restricts the influx of gas from the channel and assists in the heat transfer from the plasma to the sides of the cavity.
