Soft X-ray observations of the VELA Pulsar PSR 0833-45
Abstract
Exosat images are studied for energy ranges from 0.03 to 2.4 keV. The X-ray map confirms the Einstein results which show a point like emission centered on the pulsar, a compact nebula with 1 min radius around the pulsar, and an emission region extending from the pulsar in the southwest direction out to 3 min. Filter spectroscopy allows crude spectral fits to the point like source and the compact nebula separately. Reheating by vortex creep in the crust of the neutron star can generate the observed blackbody like luminosity for reasonable values of pinning parameters.
