A note on two questions concerning continuum mechanics
Abstract
Formulations are considered for two problems related to continuum mechanics. In the first part, a variational principle for incompressible perfect fluids is developed. It is noted that applications of the Castigliano theorem of classical elasticity generally assume that volume forces are negligible. In the second part, it is shown that Castigliano's theorem can be extended to take volume forces into account.
