Thermal nonlinearity and small-scale stratification of a magnetized plasma with Coulomb collisions in a high-frequency field
Abstract
It is shown that a magnetized plasma with Coulomb collisions in an intense RF field manifests itself as a nonlinear medium with a thermal-nonlinearity mechanism connected with the effect of a transverse thermal force on the transport processes. This feature is explained by the effect of thermal diffusion of the plasma across the magnetic field, resulting in an increase in the density of charged particles in the RF-heated region. Conditions for the development of quasi-static instability in such a plasma are defined. This type of instability is shown to be connected with the small-scale stratification of ionospheric plasma in the field of an intense radio wave.
