Magnetic properties of PrIn 3 and TmIn 3 in magnetic fields up to 40 T
Abstract
The induced magnetic moment in the cubic rare earth indium compounds RIn 3 (R = Pr, Tm) was measured in magnetic fields up to 40 T at 4.2 K. In addition the magnetic susceptibility of TmIn 3 was measured in the temperature range 4.2-300 K. The magnetization data of the singlet ground state compound PrIn 3 is compared with the calculated magnetic moment. On the basis of the analysis a crystalline electric field level scheme of Tm 3+ in TmIn 3 is proposed. The ground state of TmIn 3 appears to be the non-magnetic doublet Γ 3 and the first excited state is the triplet Γ (1)5.
