Studies on Molecular Metals.
Abstract
Available from UMI in association with The British Library. A qualitative wave mechanical model for electrons in metals was developed, which offers a self-consistent approach to understanding many of the properties of molecular metals. The electrical conductivity of three examples of linear chain platinates was examined. The time dependent behaviour of Rb_3(H_3 O)_{0.2} (Pt(CN) _4) cdot(O_3 SOcdotOSO_3) _{0.5}cdotO.8H_2 O was found to be due to microcracks developing in the crystal samples. The compound Fe_ {0.8} (Pt(C_2O _4)_2]cdotnH _2O was classified with Mg and Mn bis(oxalato)platinates. Ca_{0.8} [Pt(C_2O _4)_2]cdotnH _2O samples prepared at 50^ circC possess higher conductivities than those reported by other workers. The relationships between structure and conductivity in analogues of BEDT-TTF containing nitrogen heterocyclic rings were examined. A correlation between short S--S intermolecular contacts and metallic behaviour was found. A structural model for molecular superconductors was developed. Electrochemically grown polypyrrole films containing Ni and Pd maleonitrile-dithiol were more stable in air than those containing BF_4^-. Structural studies on polypyrrole films grown on mercury and platinum electrodes elucidate the conduction mechanism in polypyrrole.
