Gravitational instantons and the splitting off of an expanding universe
Abstract
Using the model of a gravitational field interacting with matter fields, an instanton is found which describes the splitting off of a small closed universe from a plane universe. This closed universe then expands classically in the inflationary mode. It is noted that the existence of such instantons may allow the possibility of the self-generation of a system of expanding universes.
