Influence of a 'short circuit' effect on the dynamics of an artificial comet (The AMPTE experiment)
Abstract
An aspect of Comet Halley studies involved the investigation of the acceleration of a stationary plasma cloud by a plasma stream moving across the B0 magnetic field. This effect was simulated in the AMPTE experiment through the injection of barium ion clouds into the solar wind. In this paper, a model for the short-circuiting of currents and the electric field distribution is proposed which explains the main dynamical features of the artificial comet in the AMPTE experiment.
