Evolution of a strong spherical shock wave in an inhomogeneous atmosphere
Abstract
An approximate solution to the problem of the upward propagation of a strong spherical acoustic shock wave in an exponential atmosphere is obtained using the Whitham method. The characteristics of the evolution of the beam tube surface, shockfront velocity, and pressure are investigated. A study is also made of the evolution of the shock front and its 'break-through' to infinity. The results obtained are shown to be more accurate than similar analytical results in the literature.
