Experimental determination of the coefficient of transformation of a poloidal magnetic field into a toroidal one during the differential rotation of a conducting sphere and a spherical shell
Abstract
An experiment involving the determination of the transformation coefficient of a poloidal field into a toroidal one is described in which a conducting spherical shell and a conducting sphere with a liquid-metal contact layer between them were set into differential rotation. A formula for calculating the coefficient is derived. The results are pertinent to the study of the toroidal field in the earth's interior.
