NASA astrophysics data system (ADS) study.
Abstract
The forthcoming launches of the Great Observatories create an opportunity for multi-spectral research in astronomy that will extend into the next century. Recognizing that both the operational and the budgetary aspects of the Great Observatories must be addressed in a timely manner, the Director of the NASA Astrophysics Division, in 1985, initiated a thorough study of the operation and data management of astrophysics missions. The study was divided into two phases. The first phase dealt mainly with the project management practices of NASA and was completed in April, 1986. The second phase of the activity has the goal to define the functional concepts for an astrophysics data system that will serve the astrophysics community into and through the 1990s.
