Automorphisms in action: spatially homogeneous EinsteinMaxwell plane waves
Abstract
The timedependent automorphism formalism is applied in the computer algebra system SHEEP to identify the subclasses of EinsteinMaxwell planewave solutions which admit Bianchi groups acting on spacelike hypersurfaces. Using the classification program CLASSI, the invariant characterizations of these metrics are obtained and the results used to generalize previous work by Siklos on spatially homogeneous vacuum planewave cosmologies. The invariant characterizations are described through a threedimensional phase space which physically represents the amplitude and polarization of the plane wave and the electromagnetic field. A previous theorem on linearly polarized plane gravitational waves is also generalized.
