Laboratory Studies of the Infrared Spectral Properties of CO in Astrophysical Ices
Abstract
The authors present the spectral properties of CO in various astrophysical ice analogues. These include peak positions, full widths at half-maxima, band profiles, and integrated absorbances (band strengths) of the CO fundamental stretching mode at 2137 cm-1 in different ices under various conditions. It is shown that good quality, moderate-resolution spectra of the interstellar CO feature can be used to unravel the composition, concentration, temperature, and thermal history of interstellar and cometary ices containing CO. In particular, it is shown that in most astrophysical sources the CO is intimately mixed in ices dominated by polar molecules, of which H2O is probably the major component.
