Secular Variations of the Semimajor Axes of the Planets
Abstract
The paper presents an analytical method, based on the Lie series canonical transformation, which allows the computation of the secular variations in the semimajor axes of an N-body system. As an example, the amplitude of the main secular term in Uranus and Neptune semimajor axes, having a periodicity of 1,119,000 yr, was computed explicitly. Comparison with the results of numerical integrations yields satisfactory agreement.
