Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 26, 1988.
Abstract
Selected topics in astronomy are discussed, reviewing the results of recent observational and theoretical investigations. Topics addressed include the Galactic nuclear bulge and the stellar content of spheroidal systems, the polarization properties of extragalactic radio sources, voids, SN and SNRs, and enhanced star formation and IR emission in the centers of galaxies. Consideration is given to the IR temporal development of classical novae, advances in optical astrometry, the origin of the solar system, the observed variability of solar luminosity, observational tests of world models, and galaxy clusters as indicators of the large-scale structure of the universe. Diagrams, graphs, and sample images are provided.
