Stellar kinematics in SB0 galaxies : NGC 2983.
Abstract
The stellar kinematics and the photometric properties of the SB0 galaxy NGC 2983 have been investigated. The system possesses an extended lens of constant surface brightness, crossed by a thin bar and by an outline of spiral arms. The bar contributes about 17% of the total light. The total absolute magnitude of the galaxy is estimated to be M_B_ = -20.56 Out of the bar, the stars appear to move in circular orbits, with a local minimum of velocities at a distance from center which is almost equal to the length of the bar. Within the lens the velocities are slowly decreasing outward. Inside the bar, the stars deviate from circular rotation, exhibiting a wavy profile similar to that observed in other SB0s with deviations of the order of 100 km s^-1^. The velocity dispersion is largest at the position of the nucleus of the galaxy and roughly symmetric with respect to it. The V_max_/σ_0_ observed is 1.0-1.2, typical of this class of galaxies.
