Three hundred years of gravitation
Abstract
The development of gravitational theory and experiment from Newton's day to the present is reviewed. The topics addressed include: Newtonianism and today's physics; Newton, quantum theory, and reality; experiments on gravitation from Newton's Principia to Einstein's general relativity; the problem of motion in Newtonian and Einsteinian gravity; the developing idea of dark stars; astrophysical black holes; gravitational radiation; the emergence of structure in the universe; gravitational interactions of cosmic strings; inflationary cosmology; inflation and quantum cosmology; superstring unification; and covariant description of canonical formalism in geometrical theories.
