Symmetric and antisymmetric modes in the turbulent farwake
Abstract
Using an array of Xprobes aligned in the plane of main shear in the turbulent farwake of a circular cylinder, large scale structures are detected on either side of the wake centerline. Some of these structures are arranged either antisymmetrically or symmetrically about the centerline. Although the antisymmetric arrangement is the most probable, the probability of a symmetric arrangement is significant. Streamfunctions conditioned on detections made on one side of the wake are qualitatively similar to those obtained for the antisymmetric arrangement. Contributions to the Reynolds normal and shear stresses are approximately independent of the type of arrangement when both coherent and small scale motions are considered.
