New high-resolution H I observations of I Zw 18 and I Zw 36.
Abstract
The blue compact galaxies I Zw 18 and I Zw 36 have been observed in the 21 cm line with the configurations B and C of the Very Large Array synthesis telescope, achieving resolutions of 5arcsec×5arcsec×12 km s-1. The new maps reveal extremely dense H I clumps located on the edge of the locus of the formation bursts. The mass derived from the ordered part of the velocity field is of the order of 13 times the total H I mass in I Zw 18.
