Variations of the solar X-ray spectrum with solar-activity variations
Abstract
A theory for the ionization of the earth's upper atmosphere indicates that, in the X-ray region, the major portion of the ionization can be attributed to the 2-8-nm region. Formulas are presented for calculating the relative change in the X-ray spectral function in this region according to data on a reference flux measured in the 0.8-2-nm region. Equations for the statistical correlation betwen this reference flux and the 10.7-cm flux are obtained on the basis of Solrad-11 data. This makes it possible to predict spectral functions for the diagnostics of the ionosphere.
