Laser diode polarization beam combiners in optical communication systems
Abstract
The paper presents performance criteria for an optical communication system using a polarization beam combiner for the transmitter configuration. It is shown that, under similar conditions, a quantum-well heterostructure laser diode provides the greatest transmitter output power while a gain-guided double heterostructure device yields the highest bit extinction ratio.
