An optical waveguide diffraction grating sensor
Abstract
An active nonintrusive concept for sensing and measuring the spectral content of signals within optical fibers is described. Essentially, diffraction gratings are induced ultrasonically within a fiber-optic waveguide which in turn interacts with the guided optical signals. Measurement of the optical signal wavelength is possible by scanning the deflected spectra. Experimental results of a fiber optic sensor are presented and possible applications are discussed.
