The excitation of plasma waves by an electromagnetic wave packet
Abstract
The nonlinear effect of the excitation of longitudinal Langmuir waves in a plasma by a short electromagnetic wave packet is considered. The amplitudes of the excited waves are determined as well as the packet's energy losses. Conditions under which the packet spreads due to dispersion and diffraction are formulated. The feasibility of using fast plasma waves excited by a short laser pulse in a rarefied plasma for particle acceleration is discussed.
