Detection of absorption lines in the spectra of X-ray bursts from X1608-52
Abstract
X-ray bursts from X1608-52 were observed with the gas scintillation proportional counters onboard Tenma. Absorption features were detected in the spectra of three bursts among the 17 observed. These absorption features are consistent with a common absorption line at 4.1 keV. The energy and the properties of the absorption lines of the X1608-52 bursts are similar to those observed from the X1636-53 bursts previously reported. The absorption lines are most probably redshifted by the effect of the strong gravitational field near the neutron star surface. Near equality of the absorption line energies for X1636-53 and X1608-52 would then imply that the neutron stars in these two systems are very similar to each other. In addition, the detection of an absorption line from the second X-ray burst source suggests that absorption lines may be present in the burst spectra from other sources.
