Twenty-five years of Antarctic upper atmosphere research at Rhodes University
Abstract
The formation of the Antarctic Upper Atmosphere Research Group, and the ionosphere research conducted at Rhodes University are described. The initial use of ionosondes to study the upper atmosphere in Antarctica, and the data provided by the ionograms are examined. Consideration is given to the anomalous daily variations in the ionosphere of the South Atlantic, particle precipitation and its effect on the ionosphere, oblique incidence ionograms, airglow observations, and conventional pulse ionosondes. Some of the projects conducted at the facilities, in particular the International South Atlantic Anomaly Campaign, are discussed.
