Elliptische Galaxien.

The characteristic features of elliptical galaxies are discussed, reviewing the results of recent observations, and illustrated with diagrams, graphs, and sample images. Topics examined include the distribution of stars (isophote twist, external shells, and boxy isophotes), the kinematics of the stars, ellipticals with dust or gas clouds, extended cool H I clouds, X-ray halos, and elliptical radio galaxies with lobes and jets. The importance of ellipticals for theoretical models of galactic origin, evolution, and interaction is indicated.
