A single-mode fiber-optic rotation sensor
Abstract
An analysis is made of polarization nonreciprocity in single-mode fiber-optic ring interferometers with weak birefringence in the case when an irregular strong anisotropic optical fiber depolarizing the radiation is used. This nonreciprocity is shown to affect the contrast of the interference pattern as well as the sensitivity and the scale factor of the interferometer. An interferometer model with a single-mode directional coupler has been constructed which permits a two-fold increase in rotation sensitivity as compared with an interferometer based on discrete elements. The minimum phase shift measured by the sensor was about 3 x 10 to the -6th rad.
