Infrared spectroscopy of interstellar dust.
Abstract
IR spectroscopy provides a valuable technique for investigating the composition and evolution of interstellar grain material in a variety of astrophysical environments. This paper briefly reviews proposed identifications for the observed features, and discusses some recent observations of the Taurus dark cloud and the Galactic center region. The detection of deep 3-micron absorption towards the Galactic center casts doubt on the assumption that this line of sight is representative of the diffuse interstellar medium.
