a Search for Jets in Direct Photon Events from Hadronic Collisions at 280GEV/C.
Abstract
Available from UMI in association with The British Library. Experiment WA70 has collected a large number of pi^-p, pi^+ p and pp events containing a high P_ {t} shower using the Omega Spectrometer in the CERN West Area, a novel electromagnetic calorimeter and a 280GeV/c beam with a liquid hydrogen target. From this raw event sample a number of events containing a direct photon with a P_{t } greater than 4GeV/c have been identified and this thesis presents an analysis of these direct photon events which examines them for evidence of the expected QCD jet structure. Results on the fractional momenta of the interacting partons and the fragmentation of the jet recoiling against the direct photon are presented.
