Mechanical properties of large quasicrystals in the Al-Cu-Li system
Abstract
Large grains as well as orientated grains of the quasi-crystals of Al-Cu-Li system were grown, and their mechanical properties were determined using the indentation method. The merits of the method are discussed. The fracture toughness changed five times with orientation, and the material was found to be brittle. The hardness was only a weak function of orientation. The modulus of the composite material, at 81 GPa, approached that of covalently bonded ceramics. The toughness compared with that of brittle glassy materials and the strength with that of metallic alloys.
