The ion optical properties of a travelling-wave chopper
Abstract
The ion optical properties of a travelling-wave chopper and its influence on energy and time spread of bunched low energy heavy ion beams are investigated. An arrangement where the deflection plates are separated by grounded plates is found to be most effective in generating beam pulses with good time structure. Pulse widths of 0.45 ns (fwhm) for protons and deuterons and 1.9 ns for 12C and 19F are routinely achieved.
