The inverse problem of the calculus of variations applied to some quasigeostrophic equations
Abstract
A fundamental theorem on the inverse problem of the calculus of variations due to Vainberg is used to obtain a variational formulation for some quasigeostrophic flows described interm of the stream function. Furthermore, Noether's theorem is applied to the Lagrangian corresponding to the linearized quasigeostrophic equation in order to derive the related energy conservation law.
