Magnetic confinement of broad-line clouds in active galactic nuclei.
Abstract
The region containing the clouds that emit the broad spectral lines in active galactic nuclei may be pervaded by a magnetic field of strength ≡1 G. Magnetic stresses could then confine the clouds, obviating the need for a Compton-heated medium in pressure balance with the clouds.
