Multiwavelength monitoring of the dwarf nova VW Hydri. I. Overview.
Abstract
Observations from different wavelength regions are used to investigate outburst mechanisms in VW Hydri. Previous observational data on VW Hydri and the present theoretical understanding of dwarf novae are first reviewed. Observational data from the current data set on ordinary outbursts are found to be self-consistently interpreted both by assuming that all or most of the matter transferred in quiescence is accreted by the white dwarf, indicating that outbursts are due to bursts of mass transfer, or by assuming that all or most of the matter transferred in quiescence is accumulated in the accretion disc and deposited on the white dwarf by a disc instability during outburst. Data support the suggestion (Bateson, 1977; Marino and Walker, 1979) that all superoutbursts are triggered by an ordinary outburst.
