Relationship between Kane's equations and the Gibbs-Appell equations
Abstract
It is presently noted that Kane's (1980) equations are a particular form of the Gibbs-Appell equations first proposed by Gibbs in 1879, subsequently rediscovered independently by Appell in 1899, and discussed in a number of textbooks. It is demonstrated that Kane's equations are an intermediate equation set arising in the derivation of the Gibbs-Appell equations from Newton's equations.
