Line Radiation from Accreting Magnetized Neutron Stars
Abstract
According to the novel, nonthermal model presented for cyclotron line radiation from accreting magnetized neutron stars, the maser instability above the magnetic polar cap of accreting neutron stars may be excited by a nonthermal electron component. The radiation whose frequency lies near the electron cyclotron frequency and its second harmonic may also be generated under these conditions. The model indicates that the energy and intensity of this line radiation will vary with the pulsation phase of X-ray pulsars. Attention is given to examples of these phenomena in Her X-1.
