In this review, the author deals principally with the optical morphology of these three types of object, and attempts to outline similarities and essential differences. By this, he includes studies of the types of host galaxy, nuclear and galaxy luminosities and colours, interactions with other galaxies, and the general associations with other galaxies. Where relevant, he refers to morphology at other wavelengths (generally radio), spectroscopy, and UV or X-ray properties.
