A new property of elliptical open resonators (EORs) is reported: when oscillations are excited in the EOR, conditions always arise under which a stable interference pattern is formed in the focal plane of the resonator. This property follows from an analysis of multiple reflections of rays from the elliptical mirror of the resonator. It is noted that this effect should be considered in the design of diffraction devices, semiconductor microwave oscillators, and spectroscopic interferometers on the basis of EORs.
