Resonant excitation and screening of waves in a rotating fluid
Abstract
The resonant excitation and screening of waves in a rotating fluid is studied theoretically with reference to the spiral arms of galaxies; these are viewed as due to the instability of twodimensional shear gas flow in the galactic disk. Particular consideration is given to a change in the pattern of waves generated by vortices as a function of r sub 0/R sub k, where r sub 0 is the ObukhovRossby radius and R sub k is identified with the velocitydiscontinuity radius.
