Dynamical Instability of a Model of M87
Abstract
The stability of Newton and Binney's dynamical model of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 is tested with a mean-field N-body code. The model is unstable to the formation of a bar near the center. This result suggests that stable models of M87 with strong velocity anisotropies may have to be nonspherical.
